Reading aloud to an adult or older sibling- 15 to 20 minutes
This will increase fluency, volcabulary and most importantly reading comprehension. Students should be questioned about the meaning of the text as they read to an adult. Any words that they don't pronounce or understand should be clarified and the meaning explained or looked up in a dictionary preferably.
Spelling words to be practiced to an adult or older sibling- 10 minutes
Students will recieve a weekly quota of between 11 and 15 words. These should be orally read out to an adult or written down and checked each night. The spelling words can be found in their diary which should go home each night in their home folder.
To improve general knowledge of maths topics that we are learning in class students should be logging onto Study Ladder. Twice a week for 20 minutes.
Study Ladder is a website where I can set up specific tasks for groups of students at different levels to assist them and reinforce concepts that we have or will be learning about in Maths lessons in class. The games and activities that they complete enable me to build up a profile of the students understanding and gives me specific reports.
Extra Homework
Students will be asked to take any work home that they have not finished from over the week. This usually includes students spelling contract, where students are required to complete 4 spelling activities over the week and be finished by Thursday.
Any school based projects may be sent home with a note in the students diary.
Any work that is not handed in on time will get a penalty of one grade loss as students must respect due dates and develop some organisational skills. I give students a fair amount of time to complete work and think this policy is only fair on the rest of the students who have worked hard to manage their time.
Parent Assistance with Homework/Projects
It is expected that parents are their to guide their children through any difficulties and help them brainstorm ideas. Doing students work for them only leads to a false sense of reality for the future and poor time management. Guidance and role modelling is the key parents assisting in any work at home along with the promotion of the theory " Have a go and do your best, that is all that is asked of you" is a way of helping them past the thought of quiting when it all gets too hard.
If students have got themselves into a tough situation with poor management or laziness, it is oftem better to let them sought out the problem themselves and learn from the mistakes. After seeing this happen with students in the past they are very quick to learn by their mistakes if they are left to take responsibility and I drive this home to them in class. Mistakes are good as long as a lesson is learnt by them and we don't make that same mistake again.
I am also available by email if you have any questions of how to assist. My work email is jamie.meredith@brightonps.sa.edu.au I tend to check it every 2 days.
